Returning home, Cicero didn’t bother crawling into bed. Instead, he sat in his apartment looking at a flickering oil lamp as his mind wandered. Sulla had indeed shown himself to be a reformer and he’d done much to help fix a broken system, but he came by his power unjustly. There could be no republic if powerful men took their posts without being placed in them by the will of the people. But for all his misgivings, Cicero knew he could also do much good under the umbrella of Sulla’s unfettered power. In fact, with such power backing him, Cicero could institute all manner of governmental reforms with relative ease.

Cicero looked past the oil lamp to his father splayed out on the bed with one leg still on the floor and an arm cradling a jug of wine. Cicero had hoped that his father would rally and find cause to improve his situation with Cicero taking on such a high-profile case. But Tullius had simply carried on with his daily drinking rituals. Perhaps if Cicero wasn’t so busy scrambling for work as a lawyer, he could help his father sober up. He could even give his father meaningful work and a reason to live again. With a post under the powerful Sulla, Cicero might even be able to get in the good graces of Terentia’s father. That would certainly make life easier. Cicero went on like this for hours, his mind jumping from thought to thought, weighing the positives and negatives of each choice.

Finally, Cicero unfurled a blank scroll and readied his quill. Looking outside, he felt the city coming to life. He smiled and began to write, realizing he’d known the answer to his decision all along.
